ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the impact of environmental scanning on organizational resilience through the mediation of organizational learning and innovation based on organizational information processing theory (OIPT) within Egyptian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) during the COVID-19 pandemic.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted a cross-sectional design to collect the data used to carry out mediation analysis. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample consisting of 249 Egyptian SMEs. The smart partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique was adopted to test the hypotheses.FindingsEnvironmental scanning does not have a direct effect on organizational resilience. However, organizational learning and innovation fully mediate the relationship between environmental scanning and organizational resilience.Research limitations/implicationsThe sample size was small, covering only Egyptian manufacturing SMEs. The results may differ in the service sector and other countries. The study was cross-sectional which is limited to tracing the long-term effects of environmental scanning, organizational learning and innovation on organizational resilience. Accordingly, a longitudinal study may be undertaken.Practical implicationsManagers in Egyptian SMEs should use signals from environmental scanning activities as input for learning and transforming business processes through innovation to develop organizational resilience.Originality/valueThis study is the first to investigate the role of environmental scanning in building organizational resilience through organizational learning and innovation based on the perspective of OIPT within Egyptian SMEs during the COVID-19 crisis.

ABSTRACT

At present, the filtration of virus and other small particles in the air by meltblown cloth produced by electret treatment mainly depends on its electrostatic adsorption mechanism. However, because the surface charge of melt blown fabric can not be maintained for a long time, it can not maintain high efficiency filtration for a long time. Therefore, there is no guarantee for the medical staffs to not be infected by COVID-19. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the mechanical filtration efficiency of melt blown fabric in the situation of an electric charge loss. In this paper, nylon 6 (PA6) nanofibers were electrospun on melt blown cloth by electrospinning technology, and a sandwich material with melt blown cloth as surface layer and PA6 nanofibers as middle layer was made by hot- pressing technology;the surface morphology, thermal and mechanical properties of the sandwich material were characterized, and its filtration performance was tested. The experimental results show that the surface integrity of the sandwich material is high, and the diameter of nanofibers can reach about 67 nm;without the electret treatment, the filtration efficiency of the sandwich material for particles in an size of 0.2 μm is more than 95%,while the filtration efficiency of non-woven fabric is zero;the filtration resistance of the material is about 284 Pa, which is suitable for personal protection. © 2023 Chengdu University of Science and Technology. ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 virus is still a challenge because of its diversity and mutations. The binding interactions of the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor and the spike protein are relevant for the SARS-CoV-2 virus to enter the cell. Consequently, it is important and helpful to analyze binding activities and the changes in the structure of the ACE2 receptor and the spike protein. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy is able to analyze small concentrations of the proteins without contact, non-invasively and label-free. In this work, we present a SERS based approach in the visible wavelength range to analyze and study the binding interactions of the ACE2 receptor and the spike protein. SERS measurements of the ACE2 receptor, the spike protein and the ACE2-spike complex were performed. Additionally, an inhibitor was used to prevent the spike protein from binding to ACE2 and to compare the results. The analysis of the measured SERS spectra reveals structural differences and changes due to binding activities. Thus, we show that the performed SERS based approach can help for rapid and non-invasive analysis of binding interactions of the ACE2-spike complex and also of protein binding in general. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study analyzes in-depth how knowledge-intensive small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can achieve higher new product development (NPD) process performance in the epidemic era and examine the internal development mechanism of knowledge-intensive SMEs in the process of continuous digital transformation.Design/methodology/approachThis issue is tested with partial least squares on data collected via a survey conducted from November 2021 to February 2022. The sample comprises 487 knowledge-intensive SMEs operating in China.FindingsThe results indicate that one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, market development strategy (MDS), plays an important role in process performance from an inside-out financial perspective and an outside-in customer perspective. Simultaneously, product innovation efficiency (PIE) mediates the relationship between MDS and the above results. Big data analytics capabilities (BDACs) positively regulate the relationship between MDS and PIE.Research limitations/implicationsThe authors do not consider other contingency factors. Future research should introduce influential factors such as leadership and competitive intensity to further distinguish the effects of MDS on NPD process performance.Practical implicationsThe study findings offer suggestions to help knowledge-intensive SME managers better manage their NPD process by making better use of their limited resources in developing countries such as China.Originality/valueThis study is one of only a few to adopt a process-oriented perspective to specifically examine how one form of cross-functional ambidexterity, MDS, impacts knowledge-intensive SME process performance in the epidemic era. This study also extends the theoretical framework of cross-functional ambidexterity to BDAC research.

ABSTRACT

2022 is the third year of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and its troubles on new drug discovery are gradually apparent. 37 new drugs were approved by the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) last year, down from the peak of 50 new drug approvals in 2021. Notably, first-in-class drugs still occupy a dominant position this year, with a total of 21 drugs. Among them, 7 are first-in-class small molecule drugs. Although the total number of new drug approvals in 2022 sharply decreased, some first-in-class small molecule drugs were regarded as significant, including mitapivat, the first oral activator targeting the pyruvate kinase (PK);mavacamten, the first selective allosteric inhibitor targeting the myocardial beta myosin ATPase;deucravacitinib, the first deuterated allosteric inhibitor targeting the tyrosine kinase 2 (TYK2);and lenacapavir, the first long-acting inhibitor targeting the HIV capsid. Generally, the research of first-in-class drugs needs to focus on difficult clinical problems and can treat some specific diseases through novel targets and biological mechanisms. There are tremendous challenges in the research processes of new drugs, including biological mechanism research, target selection, molecular screening, lead compound identification and druggability optimization. Therefore, the success of first-in-class drugs development has prominent guidance significance for new drug discovery. This review briefly describes the discovery background, research and development process and therapeutic application of 3 firstin- class small molecule drugs to provide research ideas and methods for more first-in-class drugs.Copyright © 2023, Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. ABSTRACT

Constructing an epidemic dynamic model and exploring the spreading law of epidemic have very important theoretical significance for epidemic prevention and control. Based on the existing homogeneous mixing model, in view of the increasingly obvious heterogeneity of individual contact relationships, and each individual is in a different contact relationship, a dynamic small-world network model that takes into account individual status. Contact tracking has been established to simulate the spread of the COVID-19 in society. By comparing the simulation results, the rationality of the built model is explained. On this basis, the simulation calculated the impact of the network topology and the proportion of vaccinated people on the spread of the COVID-19, analyzed the critical value of herd immunity. The established propagation model is reasonable, and feasible to achieve herd immunization by vaccination. © 2023 Editorial Borad of Complex Systems and Complexity Science. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Adjuvant anti-cancer systemic therapy (SACT) following lung resection improves overall survival in stage II/II non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) National Specialty Report for Lung Cancer recommends centres publish adjuvant SACT rates for National benchmarking and proposes a target of >40% of eligible patients undergo SACT. We report a regional audit into the uptake of adjuvant SACT in Greater Manchester (GM). Method(s): A retrospective case review of all patients undergoing curative-intent NSCLC surgery with a pathological stage of II/III from 01/01/21 to 30/04/21. Data collected included patient demographics, uptake of adjuvant SACT, reasons for no adjuvant SACT and tolerance and complications of SACT. Result(s): 58 patients underwent surgical resection within the audit period and were eligible for adjuvant SACT. Median age was 70 years (range 45 - 81) and 60% were female. 47% (27/58) commenced adjuvant SACT;41% (24/58) were treated with chemotherapy and 7% (4/58) were treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors. 58% (14/24) of patients that commenced adjuvant chemotherapy completed 4 cycles. Carboplatin/Vinorelbine was the commonest regimen (82%, 18/22). There were no grade III-V complications and no chemotherapy-related deaths. Dose reduction due to toxicity was required in 14% (3/22). The reasons adjuvant systemic therapy was not given were patient choice in 32% (10/31), poor physical health such that risks outweighed benefits in 42% (13/31), and other reasons (e.g. need to treat synchronous primary tumours) in 26% (8/31). COVID-19 was not recorded as a cause for adjuvant omission/ dose reduction. Conclusion(s): This data provides national benchmarking information for adjuvant SACT in NSCLC and suggests the target of >40% is achievable and appropriate. Interventions that improve patient fitness pre- and post-operatively might increase adjuvant SACT uptake. ABSTRACT

COVID-19 epidemic is not over. The correct wearing of masks can effectively prevent the spread of the virus. Aiming at a series of problems of existing mask-wearing detection algorithms, such as only detecting whether to wear or not, being unable to detect whether to wear correctly, difficulty in detecting small targets in dense scenes, and low detection accuracy, It is suggested to use a better algorithm based on YOLOv5s. It improves the generalization and transmission performance of the model by changing the ACON activation function. Then Bifpn is used to replace PAN to effectively integrate the target features of different sizes extracted by the network. Finally, To enable the network to pay attention to a wide area, CA is introduced to the backbone. This embeds the location information into the channel attention. © 2023 SPIE.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis paper aims to develop insight into the impact the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis had on female entrepreneurs in Ghana's beauty industry and their ability to recognize opportunities. The authors also ascertained characteristics of the women that seemed to have influenced opportunity recognition.Design/methodology/approachUsing the case study approach, the authors collected data via in-depth interviews and open-ended questionnaires from sixteen women entrepreneurs in the beauty industry. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis.FindingsThe data show that women entrepreneurs encountered challenges during the pandemic;however, some of the women were able to identify opportunities. Creativity and social media inclination were perceived to have influenced opportunity recognition. It was also observed from the demographic data that women who identified opportunities and women who could not differ in the level of education, age and firm age.Practical implicationsWomen entrepreneurs are encouraged to capitalize on social media and virtual platforms to enhance their marketing, services and operations. COVID-19 aid for businesses must be distributed equitably to all entrepreneurs in need.Originality/valueThe findings from this study provide novel insights into opportunity recognition during a crisis, focusing on a specific industry in a developing country.

ABSTRACT

Since the early 2000s, emerging markets have become the heart of global supply chains hosting a large volume of industrial productions. The second article looked into the barriers to attaining sustainability in supply chain of the Bangladeshi pharmaceutical sector and developed a hierarchical structure of those barriers using interpretive structural modeling and MICMAC analysis. The eleventh article explored a new way to assess suppliers' suitability by considering pseudo-resilience factors to achieve SSC in the post-COVID-19 era using an analytical hierarchy process and R. It also provided a case study of three smartphone processor suppliers (Jessin et al., 2023).

ABSTRACT

Case history: We present the case of a 31-year-old Hispanic male with history of recurrent bronchiectasis, invasive aspergillosis, and severe persistent asthma, who is now status post lung transplant for end-stage lung disease. He initially presented at 7 years of age with diarrhea, failure to thrive, and nearly absent immunoglobulin levels (IgG < 33 mg/dL, IgA < 7 mg/dL, IgM = 11 mg/dL, IgE = 4 IU/dL) necessitating IVIG treatment. Small intestinal biopsy showed villous atrophy consistent with autoimmune enteropathy. Sweat chloride was reported as indeterminate (44 me/dL). Initial WBC, platelet, and T- and NK-cell counts were within normal range, and B-cell count and percentage were borderline low. Most recently, he was found to have increased immature B-cell count (CD21low), decreased memory B-cells, and poor pneumococcal vaccine antibody response. Patient has been hospitalized numerous times with increasingly severe bronchiectasis, pneumonitis, and COVID-19 infections twice despite vaccination, leading to respiratory failure and lung transplantation. Family history is negative for immune deficiency and lung diseases. Discussion(s): Of these 3 VUSs (see the table), the one in IRF2BP2 has the most pathogenic potential due to its autosomal dominant inheritance, its location in a conserved domain (Ring), and previous case reports of pathogenic variants at the same or adjacent alleles 1-3. Baxter et al reported a de novo truncating mutation in IRF2BP2 at codon 536 (c.1606CinsTTT), which is similar to our patient's mutation. This patient was noted to have an IPEX-like presentation, with chronic diarrhea, hypogammaglobulinemia, and recurrent infections. Variant Functional Prediction Score for our variant predicts a potentially high damage effect. There are 2 other case reports of heterozygous mutations in loci adjacent to this allele;one (c.1652G>A)2 with a similar clinical phenotype to our patient and the other (C.625-665 del)3 with primarily inflammatory features and few infections. Impact: This case highlights a variant in IRF2BP2 associated with severe hypogammaglobulinemia, recurrent pulmonary infections, and autoimmune enteropathy. ABSTRACT

COVID-19 struck the world by storm and has taken its victims along the way. It had also put the whole world on a temporary pause as people tried to manage the virus as best as possible. It has affected people all around the globe and had a huge impact on the global economy. This research will look into how microbusinesses have used social media in order to better face the challenges and changes that came due to the COVID-19 crisis while it will discuss how businesses' perceptions were altered along the way. In particular we are reviewing relevant academic literature surrounding microbusinesses and how they have been affected by COVID-19. The research methods used within this study, and the research results will be stated with reference to primary respondents. We have used a combination of secondary and primary research to develop further understanding of microbusinesses and the impact that COVID-19 has had on organizations in relation to the use of the internet and social media platforms. Limitations of the study will also be identified, and future research areas will be identified.

ABSTRACT

Problem: Several large studies have demonstrated that COVID-19 pregnant individuals are at a significant risk for severe disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes. The mechanisms underlying these phenomena remain to be elucidated and are the focus of our project. Although fetal and placental infection is rare, placental abnormalities and adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with placental dysfunction in COVID-19 cases have been widely reported. In particular, placental thrombosis and lesions consistent with maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) of the placenta are common in individuals with COVID-19. Since thrombotic complications have been associated with COVID-19, it is not surprising that pregnant individuals with COVID- 19 are at risk for placental thrombosis. Method of Study: Placentas were evaluated histologically. Extracellular vesicles were isolated by serial centrifugation. Result(s): Adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with these placental lesions, including hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (gestational hypertension and preeclampsia), small for gestational age (SGA, birthweight < 10th percentile for gestational age), and preterm birth (PTB, < 37 weeks) are significantly increased among pregnant individuals with COVID-19. Placental infection with SARSCoV- 2 is uncommon, but multiple inflammatory and metabolic factors are likely to affect the placenta, including circulating extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from various organs that have been associated with COVID-19 pathology and disease severity.We have analyzed over 500 placentas from COVID-19 pregnancies and found marked changes in placental morphology, characterized by abnormal maternal and fetal vessels, intervillous thrombi, and fibrin deposition, even in the face of mild or asymptomatic disease. We detected increased levels of small EVs in maternal serum from COVID-19 cases compared to controls and increased levels of mitochondrial DNA in EVs from COVID-19 cases. In in vitro experiments, we found increased oxidative stress in uterine endothelial cells and primary trophoblasts. Syncytialization of trophoblast cells following exposure to EVs from pregnant COVID-19 patients was markedly reduced. RNAseq of trophoblast cells exposed to EVs from pregnant COVID-19 patients revealed disruption of multiple pathways related to mitochondria function, oxidative stress, coagulation defects, and inflammation. Timing of infection during pregnancy (first, second, and third trimester) altered EV size distribution, cargo content, and functional consequences of trophoblast EV exposure. Conclusion(s): Our studies show that COVID-19 infection during pregnancy has profound effects on placenta morphology and function. It remains to be determined what the long-term consequences are on the offspring.

ABSTRACT

The recent pandemic crisis has greatly impacted startups, and some changes are expected to be long-lasting. Small businesses usually have fewer resources and are more vulnerable to losing customers and investors, especially during crises. This study investigates how startups' business processes were affected and how entrepreneurs managed this sudden change brought by the COVID-19 outbreak. Data were analyzed using qualitative research methods through in-depth interviews with the co-founders of eighteen startups. Results show that the three core business processes affected by the COVID-19 crisis were marketing and sales, logistics and operations, and organizational support. The way to succeed is to be flexible, agile, and adaptable, with technological knowledge focusing on digital channels to find novel opportunities and innovate. Additionally, resilience, self-improvement, education, technology readiness and adoption, close relationship with customers and other stakeholders, and incubation experience seem to shield startups against pandemic crisis outbreaks. © 2023, Small Business Institute. PurposeThe unimagined workplace disturbance caused by the Coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, has made many organizations virtual or telework driven workplaces, often without the infrastructure and systems in place to support employees facing these sudden workplace changes (Burrell, 2020). Many stressors accompanied this transition, to include lack of childcare, home-school responsibilities and layoffs and business closings. These stressors have perpetuated concerns for the job and financial security for all workers (Fox, 2020), leading some employees to struggle with the work-life balance out of concern for being laid off due to perceived low productivity (Fox, 2020). This study aims to explore those manifestations.Design/methodology/approachThis qualitative research case study explores the impact COVID-19 induced telework has on their job satisfaction, mental well-being and aspects of organizational commitment to fill a gap in the literature concerning emerging workplace dynamics due to COVID-19 for small real estate businesses in the USA.FindingsThe results of this qualitative research case study provide knowledge and information about the need for small businesses to be resourceful and resilient in the way that they support and engage remote workers. This qualitative research case study explores the impact COVID-19-induced telework has on their job satisfaction, mental well-being and aspects of organizational commitment for small real estate businesses. The analysis of current work-life structures through a qualitative lens provides trends among workers to gain a greater perspective of the current accelerators and barriers to worker success in a COVID-19 teleworking environment.Originality/valueThis qualitative research case study explores the impact COVID-19 induced telework has on their job satisfaction, mental well-being and aspects of organizational commitment to fill a gap in the literature concerning emerging workplace dynamics due to COVID-19 for small real estate businesses. The value of this research is that majority of the participants were African-Americans, which represents a participant group that is highly under researched.

ABSTRACT

This is a heterodox review of Political Economy, Macroeconomics and Business Management on the readjustment effect in the tourism sector due to the impact of the digital transition and its aggravation with the COVID-19 crisis and the Ukraine war. A synthesis of the paradigmatic change with the digital economy and how it affects labor and professional relations is proposed, requiring a transformation of the economic system and the production process. Attention is focused on the tourism sector and its paradox in the European Union: despite its growing importance, however, its recognition and transformation is insufficient. This paradox is intensified in the Spanish case, where more European recovery funds are being allocated and yet the vulnerability of its SMEs and tourism entrepreneurs is growing.

ABSTRACT

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) from wildlife has raised concerns about spillover from humans to animals, the establishment of novel wildlife reservoirs, and the potential for future outbreaks caused by variants of wildlife origin. Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) are abundant in urban areas and live in close proximity to humans, providing the opportunity for spillover of SARS-CoV-2. Evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and exposure has been reported in Norway rats. We investigated SARS-CoV-2 infection and exposure in Norway rats from Southern Ontario, Canada. From October 2019 to June 2021, 224 rats were submitted by collaborating pest control companies. The majority of samples were collected in Windsor (79.9%;n = 179), Hamilton (13.8%;n = 31), and the Greater Toronto Area (5.8%;n = 13). Overall, 50.0% (n = 112) were female and most rats were sexually mature (55.8%;n = 125). Notably, 202 samples were collected prior to the emergence of variants of concern (VOC) and 22 were collected while the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) was the predominant circulating VOC in humans. Nasal turbinate (n = 164) and small intestinal (n = 213) tissue samples were analyzed for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by RT-PCR. Thoracic cavity fluid samples (n = 213) were tested for neutralizing antibodies using a surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT) (GenScript cPass);confirmatory plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) was conducted on presumptive positive samples. We did not detect SARS-CoV-2 RNA in any samples tested. Two out of eleven samples positive on sVNT had neutralizing antibodies confirmed positive by PRNT (1 : 40 and 1 : 320 PRNT70);both were collected prior to the emergence of VOC. It is imperative that efforts to control and monitor SARS-CoV-2 include surveillance of rats and other relevant wildlife species as novel variants continue to emerge.

This study aims to measure the impact of Entrepreneurial and Market Orientation on the Sustainable Competitive Advantage of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Indonesia during the recovery phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic. The aim of this research is to find solutions to understand the factors of the survival problems of small businesses facing the uncertainty of novelty during and after the Coronavirus outbreak. Using data obtained from the contribution of the questionnaire that was responded to by 335 individuals involved in MSMEs, we calculated the effect of EO and MO on SCA using Structural Equational Modeling, Partial Less Square. The findings show that EO strongly influences MO and SCA, while the relationship between MO and SCA is weaker. © 2022 IEEE.

In industry 4.0, individual behavior in organization is still very much considered as the main determinant of organizational performance. Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) is one of the unique behavior of individuals affecting the effectivity of the organization. This study focuses on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) based on the aspects of antecedents and their consequences. This study aims at examining (1) the indirect influence of transformational leadership on individual performance through organizational citizenship behavior motivation (OCBM) and OCB, (2) the direct influence of OCB on individual performance and organizational performance, (3) the direct influence of OCB for individual performance and organizational performance. This study was conducted to 66 heads of small business and 410 employee at small business in West Sumatera and analyzed using cross level methods and hypothesis testing using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). This study found that 1). OCBM and OCB simultaneously mediate the relation between transformational leadership with individual performance and also have role in elevating the individual performance, 2) individual performance is the mediator between OCBM with organizational performance and it contributes in elevating the organizational performance. The theoretical and practical implications of this study are the tranformational leadership (TL) is able to motivate the members to carry out OCB actively in organizations. Some limitations and future research directions are discussed.

ABSTRACT

In Sri Lanka, womens labor force participation has never exceeded 35% in over three decades. As of 2022, the country was ranked 110 out of 146 countries in the World Economic Forums Gender Gap Index. The gaps in womens participation in the formal economy alongside womens limited political empowerment are two leading causes for the country to be lagging in such global gender equality indicators. At a large cost to the economy, the existence of archaic gender norms that promulgate womens unpaid care work often exclude women from the formal labor force. This paper dissects the socio-economic and socio-political factors that lead to the invisibility of women in Sri Lankas economy, while seeking to understand how such underlying causes have been aggravated within the precarity of the post-pandemic context. It is important, now more than ever, to recognize the invisibility of women in Sri Lankas formal economy, while bringing about a transformative vision with a multi-pronged approach to address existing gaps and challenges. With reference to key principles of feminist economics, including the theoretical foundations of Claudia Goldin, Nancy Folbre, and Diane Elson, among others, the paper will make a case for inclusivity and intersectionality in policy recommendations aimed at encouraging womens entry, active engagement, contribution, and retention in Sri Lankas economy. The paper reaches a conclusion that when women lead, participate, and benefit equally in all aspects of life, societies and economies will thrive, thereby contributing to sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
